Thanks to John Katko and his Amphibians

 

We would like to extend our thanks to John Katko, president and founder of Friends of Wetlands and a member of the Ohio Environmental Council Board of directors, for his very informative and interesting power point presentation of Amphibians of Vernal Pools given at our last meeting on Saturday, February 21^st.   Armed with colorful pictures of local frog’s species and their eggs as well as audio of their very distinct mating calls he explained their life cycles and their importance to the natural order of our local habitats.  He also educated us on the vital roll the Salamander plays in our ecology.  He showed us a number of  different local species including the spotted salamander which is the  state species for Ohio.  At the end of his presentation, he showed is some live salamanders that he had brought with him.  John and the Friends of Wetlands are currently working to help re-introduce frogs and salamanders back into areas where the populations have diminished or disappeared.  We thank him for helping to raise our awareness of the importance of these native amphibians to the health of our community.

from Crime Watch to Frog Watch

The vernal pool frog talk last week took the dialogue from crime watch to frog watch. The one thing that stuck in my mind was that our legislation concerning real-estate development (the newer additions to our built heritage) seems to be at odds with common-sense principles pertaining to our natural heritage.

This should give us something to work on--an educational mission to our elected, appointed, and hired public servants.
